Yesterday was Record Store Day, and after having such a blast at RSD last year, we were pumped about this year’s festivities.
We went to Grimey’s, which is *such* a cool spot. If you love records (or really just music in general), and have never been there, you must go soon! It’s a record store upstairs and a live music venue downstairs - what could NOT be cool about this place? It also has a really good vibe… good tunes and good people.
And, in addition to having all of the awesome RSD special releases (which, sadly, my cash-strapped-ness stopped me from purchasing) on RSD, Grimey’s really goes big with bands playing in their parking lot all day long, plus tons of other fun stuff like a the Yazoo beer van (complete with taps, from which they dispense their yummy, locally-brewed beer), barbecue from a local BBQ joint, HUNDREDS of $1 records (Ryan scored a few), and a screen printer guy who was making cool tote bags to order (Ryan, Suze and I each got one! They were $5 - how could you not?).
Another cool thing about this year’s RSD fest (it really feels like a mini-festival at Grimey’s) was that a drummer whom I have watched/heard play for years with Ryan Adams & the Cardinals (he also recently toured with Brendan Benson) - Brad Pemberton - was playing in an Alex Chilton tribute. So, that was pretty cool. I said hi to him as we were leaving - he always seems like just the nicest guy.
RSD was a huge success in my opinion (although, I am a little bummed that we weren’t able to make it to Third Man Records to see the Racontwoers show…), and I’m sure by now, you’re wondering WTF the title of this post has to do with any of this… Right?
Well, Ali and I noticed a couple really cute kids dancing during the Alex Chilton tribute, so we were just watching them rock out… so cute! It turns out that one of the kids’ dads was playing with the Alex Chilton tribute - a guy who (from far away) looked somewhere around our age and stylish/cool. LOL.
So, when we figured out that the kid’s dad was this dude, I turned to Ali and said, “See, musicians have babies, too!”
Haha… of course I know that musicians have children just like the rest of the human race, but it always gives me a little encouragement to see someone in a situation not totally unlike mine with children. It gives me that, “Hey, I can do that, too!” feeling, which is good, I suppose.
Another thing I was thinking about is how much fun it would be to take kids to events like RSD, or festivals, etc. I’ve just always know that from a young age, I want to expose my children to fun things like that. And it might even make me seek out more things that I think would benefit them - who knows?
In totally unrelated news, on Friday, Ryan and I were eating at one of our fave Mexican restaurants, and we were SURROUNDED by babies and children (but mostly babies - srsly - the adult-baby ration was like 1-1 or something. Or so it seemed like). Is the universe trying to tell us something?
