A little over a week ago we experienced another “first” on this journey to parenthood… Our first baby shower! Papa and Gigi (Ryan’s dad and Sherry) were gracious to open their home to allow our friends and family to gather and celebrate BW’s upcoming arrival.
It was such a wonderful party, and we’re so grateful to receive so many nice gifts! However, I’m not going to lie and tell you it wasn’t weird… First of all, it’s always a little tricky when it comes to mixing family. I mean, right? My family hadn’t been around Ryan’s dad and his family since our wedding eight years ago, so of course I was having the pre-party anxiety, thinking ‘What if they don’t get along?’ ‘Will everyone be happy and have a good time?’ ‘What if they all get along fabulously and I am the weirdo?’
Thankfully, everyone got along fabulously, and a great time was had by all. Like I figured I would, I felt a little foolish for having such silly worries before the party. I should’ve known that everyone would get along. I blame my worries on my overactive imagination (again).
That wasn’t the only weird thing about the shower, though… Amidst all of the onesies, (chocolate) cake and baby conversation, I kept thinking, ‘Whoa… this is weird. we’re having a baby! This is for us! Even though I’m seven months pregnant, it’s still quite surreal. I’m sure other moms can relate to this. Every step of the way (painting the room, buying gear, doctor’s appointments) makes it more real… But some things (like the first baby shower) just make you feel like you’re in some weird dream-land/alternate reality place.
But yeah… the weirdness was just because of me, not because of anything else about the shower. As I mentioned, it was a wonderful party. It was so great to see everyone, and we really appreciate the lovely gifts!
Oh, and the best quote of the party was from our nephew, Wyatt (he’s 3)… He asked, ‘Is my cousin going to come out of your belly for the party?’ Ha!
Following are a few more pictures of the grandparents-to-be and great-grandparents-to-be from the shower:
