First of all, is anyone as sick of summer as I am?! I mean, I've tried my best to enjoy the long, HOT days, but, whew! It's hard. Especially with these 100-plus-degree days! Is this what Lana Del Rey means by the Summertime Sadness? Or something?
I keep daydreaming about the cool breezes and sweaters that await us. Le sigh...
But that's not what this post is about... This post is about gallery walls!
Ever since I was a junior in college and living in my first rental house, I've just HAD to incorporate a gallery wall in my decor.
I remember that first gallery wall, TWELVE (12? How can that be?!) years ago... My roommate and I had a few mismatched pieces of art and pictures in a variety of frames. "Let's just throw them all together on the wall, sort of like a collage," is what I remember saying. And we did. And it was so much fun. And creative!
I like gallery walls not only because they're quite interesting (people will really take the time to check out what you have on your wall, since it's way more interesting than just a single piece of framed art), but also because they take up a lot of space. If you have a huge white wall you want to fill... Do it!
Here are some pictures of the process that we went through to create our newest gallery wall:
First, we lined up everything on the floor. Now, I know that a lot of people recommend laying a huge piece of paper under your arrangement, so that you can outline each frame and mark where each nail should go. This is a genius idea (there wouldn't be much second guessing/wondering exactly where the nail needs to go with this method), and we were actually planning on doing it that way, but we had a wild hair one night (and no large piece of paper) and were ready to create our gallery wall. So, the floor arrangement was what worked for us. And yes, we did have to relocate a couple nails, but we just kinda went with it.
After we had decided the arrangement of our pieces, we started hanging. Here's my trusty assistant (or, I suppose, I was HIS trusty assistant) Ryan as he hung the first couple pieces. And, I have to note that it's quite helpful to have a husband/assistant who is very meticulous about hanging things. He's like a human level! LOL
We basically just went piece by piece, taking a moment here and there to check our progress. We changed out a few items toward the end, since we started to see that our floor arrangement was a bit longer than the wall (oops!). But, in the end, I'm quite happy with the way it turned out!
Here are a couple pictures of the finished gallery wall:
A couple things we did with this particular gallery wall:
- We decided to line up the tops and bottoms of the pieces, in order to create a fairly even line down the hallway (we might add more to the top and bottom when we don't have a 1 1/2 year old who may or may not think it's fun to pull the art/pictures off the wall. Ha!).
- However, we wanted the pieces on the left to trail upward, just for some pizazz. (Pizazz - what a word!)
- I really like the fact that when you walk in the front door, you only see part of the gallery wall. It then creates a natural flow down the hallway, toward the bedrooms.
One tip that I've read about gallery walls is that it's aesthetically pleasing to use frames in all the same color... You could achieve this by spray painting them if you'd like. Ours are all different colors, which we like for now. It's fun to think about how we could change things up in the future, though!
I thought about trying to fit our new "W" in the gallery wall, but then decided to let it stand on its own (Read more about it here!).
Do you have a gallery wall? Have you thought about creating one? I'd love to hear about yours, and any tips you may have learned!
XO
