Couch Dye DIY!

A month or so ago we decided to dye our (pink) couch.

You see, we have had the thing forever, and having a pink couch forever is a little different than having a... say, gray couch forever. You get a little tired of the pink. It also had a couple slight stains, and could use an all-around pick-me-up.

We didn't have much to spend on the project, and buying a new couch was not in our budget. Rit dye it was!

So, we brainstormed. And Googled, of course. I had had my heart set on a navy blue couch for awhile now (I thought it'd look great with the white and neutrals we have in our house), so, armed with blogger tutorials, and about $10, Ryan and I set out to buy some navy Rit dye at Walmart.

I should've considered the fact that we were trying to dye a PINK couch BLUE, though...

Regardless, here are some pictures of our Couch Dye DIY journey:

This is what the couch looked like pre-dye... As I mentioned, we've had the couch FOREVER (like, since before we were married, which, this month, was 10 years ago!), and have loved it. But it was just time for a change...

We've always considered dyeing the couch, since it (luckily) had easily removable slip covers...

We ended up using four bottles of this stuff, through two cycles (since the first cycle didn't seem to do much)...

We carefully followed instructions for front-loading washing machines, but to be honest, next time, I think we might try using a tub/kiddie pool for the soaking process, like I read on a couple blogs...

My trusty assistant (or, I guess I should call myself the assistant, since Ryan did most of the work!) led the way to the washing machine...

We used a longggggg cycle and the hottest temperature settings, as recommended...

Remember how I mentioned that I should've considered the fact that we were trying to dye a PINK couch BLUE before beginning the process? Well, yeah... It turned out purple, of course. We actually quite like the color, however - it's a pleasant change from pink. :)

I would totally recommend dyeing couch slipcovers... It does actually work. However, don't get your heart set on, say, a navy couch, since you might just end up with a purple one.
