To CIO or not to CIO... That is the question

So, last week we sat down and started to work out a schedule for Jett, since we knew that babies thrived on schedules. We were also determined to get him into a nightly routine to help him fall asleep on his own.

The nightly routine is going fairly well, as I nurse, read a story, and play some Rockabye Baby jams (last night it was Smashing Pumpkins) to get him into the going-to-bed mode each night. One of the things I’m wondering is… Is it normal for him to fall asleep at different times each night? Some nights it seems to be around 8:30 and some nights it’s around 10:30. I guess I figured he’d be settling into more of a natural routine by now. I tried to set a bedtime for him, but then realized that he did much better if I followed his cues instead of following the clock…

He seems to do well in his own room though, going to sleep on his own most nights. The first couple nights, I definitely broke a few rules, but since then, we’ve done pretty well. A couple nights, he’s fallen asleep without even crying, and a couple other nights, he just has cried a little, and I’ve watched my clock, trying so hard to not go back into his room before 5 minutes (as long as he’s not just all-out screaming). Luckily, we haven’t had many nights where I’ve felt like he had to really CIO (cry it out)… Which is fortunate, because I can barely stand not rushing in there the moment he starts to whimper! I know that we will all be quite happy once we have bedtime down, though, so I’m hoping we continue to feel that we’re improving each night!

Oh, and by the way… Jett is 3 months today… I can hardly believe it! 3 months seems like a major milestone! Whoop whoop!
